I believe we can credit Michael Jordan himself for starting the trend
towards longer shorts.

I distinctly remember announcers commenting that MJ's shorts were custom
made to be (a whole) TWO inches longer in the leg!!! Don't know the year,
but guessing this was 2 -3 years after MJ joined the league.

Woooo!!!

From that, they just got longer and longer.

when the clips of the old days come on they look like they are playing in
their underwear.
birg used to wear a uniform 2 sizes too small so it was hard to grab. and
you do see a lot of jersey grabbing these days.
