Still going just by boxes and recaps but things are looking worse and
worse:
--The top three front court players: Evans: 0-5, Booth 0-1, Smith
0-7. 0-13? Really? And against Washington's weak frontcourt? It
surely must be some sign of the apocalypse if Dalembert must be looked
on as an offensive salve.
--Iguodala: 11fga in 29 minutes for 13 points. Still not nearly good
enough. 3 boards, 6 ast, and 3 steals though which is good so the all
around potential seems to still be there.
-- Korver: 4-5fg in 20 minutes in his return. Welcome back. With
Iguodala (Williams is still pending), the only decent offensive player
on the team. For lack of other options, he could conceivably approach
being a 20ppg scorer.
--Williams had what seems like a more reasonable line: 4-9 for 13 pt,
3 ast, 4 reb in 23 minutes. Going back to summer league. his
rebounding numbers are pretty good for his slight build.
--Speaking of rebounding: Herbert Hill: 6 offensive boards in 13
minutes. It's probably indicative of the atrocious shooting but so
far I like him best among the rookies. I know I've been trying to be
optimistic about Young--and still want him to get as many significant
minutes as possible--but obviously he is still developing. Hill looks
the most ready among the rookies and should probably start getting
some of Smith's time.

The rebounding was just as bad.

The Sixers could put a decent offensive team out there: Miller, Williams,
Iguadala, Korver and Dalembert at 1 through 5, respectively. Trouble is,
that team would lose the boards every nght, and it could break down
defensively on any given play.

Hill is 6-10, and Coach plays him at center. Smith is 7-0, and plays PF.
Figure this one out. Ahh, it almost doesn't matter. Dalembert and Booth,
assuming both are healthy, are going to divide up the minutes at center. PF
will be a combination of Evans, Korver, maybe a little Amundson and Randolph
thrown in. Neither of these guys, Smith or Hill, are going to play
significant minutes once the regular season starts.
I would not be surprised at all if Coach does some force-feeding with
Thaddeus Young, giving him more minutes than his caliber of play might
justify, to try and get him NBA-hardened earlier rather than later. That
could hurt the team present tense, but might pay off in the longer run if---
IF-- the guy has the talent to start in the NBA by age 21 or so. Right now,
I'd say it's way to early to tell.

This is why it might be a good idea to go to an all-out running game.
In that case, as well, Miller's inability to shoot could hurt while
Carney and Young could be more useful than otherwise. I'm not saying
those guys should play instead of Miller, just saying that such a
running game still presents new dilemmas with this roster.
Having seen at least one of the games, can you detect at all what
Cheeks is trying to do offensively right now? Is he running plays for
specific people? Given the anemic scoring numbers, are they running
at all?

Really? I got the impression that Smith at least was going to be
ahead of Amundson and that Randolph was still having trouble with the
ankle. Also, let's not forget about Dalembert's fouling habits. If
he has one of his games where he has to play less than 30 minutes due
to foul trouble, is Booth really going to be getting around 20
minutes. I generally approved of the Booth pickup but only in the
sense of him putting in 5-10 minutes a game as a full-sized center.

My frank sense is that he is throwing guys out there to see what they can
do, and we have not seen the regular season offense yet. He has run a few
plays for Evans, and so far learned that the guy can't shoot well in a half
court offense. He is giving the rookies a lot of minutes they will never
see in the regular season, just to see what kind of talent he has. On that
score, I'd have to say Smith has been so inconsistent as to be inconclusive;
Hill looks like he can make the team; and Young so far has looked like a
bust.
Dalembert has played only one game; Korver has played only one game.
Arguably Iguodala hasn't played yet, at least not for real, as Coach tries
to find out about his new players. Tellingly, Willie Green did not get off
the bench for the last game. Not that he didi anything to deserve playing
time!
They do try and run some, but don't get enough defensive boards to make an
offense out of it.

I guess time will tell, but from what I've seen so far, I don't expect the
rookies to be major contributors. Right now my prediction is that guys like
Smith and Hill will be getting those 5-10 minutes, and vets like Booth will
get a regular spot in the rotation. As to Young, clearly the most talented
of the rookies, he is a work in progress, and as stated, his minutes will
probably depend on how much force-feeding the Coach wants to do.
