Laimbeer stays on, gets new two-year deal
BY CHRIS LAU • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • November 21, 2008
Bill Laimbeer, who in October guided the Shock to its third WNBA title
in six years, will remain coach and general manager for two more
years.
"I still enjoy doing what I'm doing," said Laimbeer, who signed the
new contract Thursday. "You can't just walk away from championships. I
think we have another championship or two in the next couple of
years."
Per team policy, financial terms weren't disclosed.
Since taking over the team midway through the 2002 season, Laimbeer
has compiled a 136-90 regular-season record with championships in
2003, 2006 and this year, as well as a trip to the Finals in 2007. He
is the league's all-time leader in coaching victories in the
postseason (27) and Finals (10).
Before next season, Laimbeer must deal with one restricted free agent
(starting center Kara Braxton) and three unrestricted free agents
(starting point guard Elaine Powell and veteran reserves Sheri Sam and
Kelly Schumacher). Laimbeer can begin negotiating with them Dec. 15
and signing them July 5.
The core of guards Katie Smith and Deanna Nolan (the 2008 and 2006
Finals MVPs, respectively) and forwards Cheryl Ford and Taj
McWilliams-Franklin remains intact.
"They are all looking forward to next year," Laimbeer said. "They all
think we are going to be a pretty good basketball team." >> Stay informed about: Webbie weeps |

Last season, even though the Celitcs beat the Pistons in the finals,
Rhondo never dominated Chauncey the way he made A.I. look silly.
However, this was clearly a team loss as it is the second time the
Celtics have beat the Pistons by nearly 20. The defense is just not
there, much like against the Suns.
I don't like the inconsistency in the team's play. They come out and
beat the Lakers in L.A. then get played off the floor in Phoenix then
come back on and handily beat the Cavs and then look like the Bobcats
in losing to the Celtics.
And speaking of the Bobcats, I read where they are negotiating with
McDyess. I thought for sure he was coming back to the Pistons. It'll
be 10 days before we know for sure. Pistons need him back.

You've tried for three seasons with Billups and came up with nothing.
Ya' got lucky once and won a title!
Iverson is the best infusion this team needs.
Ronda wasn't on the scouting report and thought to be a non-offensive
threat. He's improved since last season and has a great deal more
confidence. Sheed doesn't play well again KG. Rip's up and down,
probably depressed! You have a first year coach in Curry, snatched Amir
from the starting line up and tossed him to the end of the bench.
Didn't show love or loyalty to McDyss, who may or may not be back!
The team isn't settled, doesn't have confidence in the management, and
for now are simply collecting pay checks. That can be expected until
they get on a role. Hopefully that will happen soon before Curry says
something stupid (like Brian) in the mediaa and the team rebels against
him.

You never fail to amaze... that makes it worse... Iverson was obviously
on the scouting report and Rondo told to take advantage... AI made Rondo
into an all-star...
I am sure no one told him to let Rondo dance though the lane at will.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/8827020/Court-Awareness:-Thursday-review
# While the Garnett/Rasheed Wallace matchup was the biggest on paper,
the head-to-head action between Allen Iverson and Rajon Rondo was the
more accurate read into the Pistons' loss. Rondo shredded the Pistons'
interior time and again off penetration, leading to his 18 point, 8
assist outing.
# Without Ben Wallace and Chauncey Billups, the Pistons have not only
morphed into an up-tempo team offensively, but a gambling and
Twinkie-soft team defensively. Two years ago there is no way that Rondo
and reserve Tony Allen (13 points, all but three of which were in the
paint) would've had such easy paths through the paint.
>Sheed doesn't play well again KG.
Odd, that is not what KG has said for years.
"Like looking in the mirror" , KG on Rasheed
match-up stats for 39 games
http://www.basketball-reference.com
min FGP 3pt% Pts rb
'Sheed 36.3 .482 .406 16.7 7.7
KG 40.4 .458 .242 18.4 10.1
Sheed career 15.2 pts on .474 rbs 6.9
KG career 20.4 pts on .494 rbs 11.2
So about a +2 points for 'Sheed on career average points and -2 for KG
with the FGP reflecting that. >> Stay informed about: Webbie weeps |

There's been trouble integrating Iverson and Hamilton's games, for sure,
and from Hamilton's recent comments about a lack of trust among
teammates, I think he's not happy about the offense breaking down.
Interestingly, Iverson tried to put the defensive breakdowns on teammates
not covering for each other, or reading between the lines, not covering
for him.
Interestingly enough, Karl was also quoted recently about how Iverson
didn't trust his teammates in Denver, and how since Billups arrived the
team is taking much better shots and not forcing the ball.
I think Iverson could be useful in a Vinnie Johnson mode of getting
decent playing time as a scorer in the right situations, but I don't know
if he'd accept it. >> Stay informed about: Webbie weeps |

He was better when he had a team built around him and his offense which
was quicker then...a bunch of offensive rebounders to clean up his
misses as a plan and good set outside shooters for when he did pass
out...he has slowed a step when quick was much of his advantage.
Rip is left trying to change his game creating his own shot when he is
more effective coming off screens. No sense doing so if the ball is not
coming to him... >> Stay informed about: Webbie weeps |

What the hell scouting report are you talking about? Ronda has been
starting all season for the Celts.
Amir was not playing well enough to keep his starting position and
against he Celtics front 3 he had no business starting.

Since Curry played with a lot of the players on this team, I would bet
they have more confidence in him as a coach than they had in Flip.

George Karl told the Denver Post that now that Chauncey Billups is his
point guard and not Allen Iverson, the Nuggets have fewer bad plays
and more good plays.
"I don't think there's any question coaching a team for many minutes,
without a passing and point guard mentality, is frustrating for a
coach. Sometimes I saw something, but I couldn't get it done on the
court because I didn't have a playmaker out there," Karl said in the
Denver Post.
Karl also said, "A.I., at times, had trouble trusting the guy he's
throwing it to."
What always irked Karl was Iverson's inability to run the offense like
a general. Arguably, Iverson shot too much, and like Karl said, Denver
could outscore about half the teams in the NBA. But when it came to
beating the elite teams, the Nuggets had too many questions with "The
Answer" , about his shot selection, his dedication to defense and his
ability/inability to trust his teammates.
"We have contested-shot charts, bad-shot charts and cheap defensive
possessions," Karl said. "I would say that when A.I. was here, we had
most games in the teens of contested, tough shots, sometimes in the
20s. And I don't think we've had a double-digit one since (Billups
has) been here.
>I think Iverson could be useful in a Vinnie Johnson mode of getting

I think Vinnie made better decisions than A.I., but your point is
probably right.

Rip trying to create his own shot is not a pretty scene. He's a textbook
case of someone who is fast but not quick, and his offense is based on
beating guys with his 10th step, not his first.
Since Dumars has made a commitment to Hamilton for the next few years, I
can't see it making much sense for the team to retool the offense around
Iverson at Hamilton's expense. I'm guessing that there's going to be
increased pressure on Stuckey to force his way into the starting lineup,
although it's going to take a strong and steady hand from Curry to keep
things together for the rest of the year. >> Stay informed about: Webbie weeps |
