In the NBA you are not allowed to talk to another team's player or
agent as long as that player's under contract.

Funny how Baron Davis has the confidence to give up his $17.8 million
in the final year of his contract, simply knowing that someone will
give him big extension.

Funny how Baron Davis got a new 5 year $65 million contract from the
Clippers.

Funny how Elton Brand simply opted out to make room for Davis signing.

Funny how the same Elton Brand is willing to take less money to resign
with the Clippers.

All these need to happen for the Clippers to have room to sign both
Davis and Brand, and it all did within 48 hours.

Once again the NBA will turn a blind eye on this kind of clear
violations. The same way the NBA turned a blind eye when Jerry West
simply cleared cap room by trading away half his team, and funny how
Shaquille O'Neill opted out and immediate sign a contract with the
Lakers.

This has been going on for years and it will continue. It has also been
going on for years in the NFL who has very similar tampering rules. From
someone I know who works for an NFL team, they will send a low level guy to
make contact with a players agent to tell him they are interested and find
out what kind of money it will take for him to move. Then as soon as the FA
period opens, they send the head coach or GM down with a contract all ready
to sign.
