We know that Walshy had never seen Gallinari play before he drafted him.
Now we also learn that neither has D':
"Mike D'Antoni had not seen Danilo Gallinari, the Knicks' first-round draft
pick, play in person until this weekend."
Gallinari is the highest draft pick for the Knicks in recent memory but was
selected without either the GM or the coach having actually seen him play.
That's pretty astounding.
Who, I ask, is the principal Knicks employee who has?

Hours after conducting a workout of six players at the Madison Square
Garden Training Center on Friday, Knicks President, Basketball
Operations, Donnie Walsh, Head Coach Mike D'Antoni and the rest of the
Knicks brass reconvened to watch a solo session for Italian forward
Danilo Gallinari. >> Stay informed about: Who calls the shots? |

Come on Dan. It was well known and widely reported that Nilo had worked out
for the Knicks prior to the draft.

You wrote that prior to drafting Danilo neither Walsh or D'Antoni has
seen him live. Glenn and I, however, are under the assumption that the
Knicks held their predraft workouts prior to the draft... so they did
in fact see him live prior to the draft.
Now that we're up to speed you may respond with clarifications,
rebuttals, and insults should you wish to. >> Stay informed about: Who calls the shots? |

I just saw him "live" on TV for a few minutes in a summer league game
while I was flipping channels. From what I saw, he sucks. >> Stay informed about: Who calls the shots? |

While the *facts* say that neither Walshy nor D' has ever seen Gallinari in
person playing the game of basketball pre-draft. You may, as usual, continue
to "assume."

He was really bad in the first half, but I think it was nerves since he was
on fire at the end of the third and 4th. All his points came in about 10
minutes. >> Stay informed about: Who calls the shots? |

Oh come on, we've had a couple of other lottery picks this decade that
we didn't trade away. How could you forget players like Fred Weis,
Channing Frye and Michael Sweetney?

OK, for the last time, watching a VIDEO of Grand Canyon is not the same as
experiencing it IN PERSON.
The most prominent draft pick in nearly two decades was decided upon without
either the GM or the coach ever seeing him in action, live, in person. The
only one who did that and then recommended him was your friend Isiah Lord
Thomas III.
If you can't grok the significance of this, I give up.

But they did see him IN PERSON in a PRE-DRAFT WORK OUT where they
INTERVIEWED HIM and RAN HIM THROUGH DRILLS. Both Walsh and D'Antoni
commented on his ability and character BEFORE THE DRAFT in the ARTICLE
I referenced.
I would think it's pretty typical for scouts to be the main people
with "in game" knowledge of the players... since that's specifically
what scouts do. >> Stay informed about: Who calls the shots? |
