I know this isn't going to make sense to you. But whether it took 1
year, 4 years or 14 years or 24 years, doesn't change the fact that I
root for the Boston Celtics.

But they did play together as a team for several seasons, making it
further each year before finally putting it all together.

Yet half his team was acquired this season. Do it seems that "deals" is
really what made the difference.

I don't recall the Mavs or Nets ever turning half their roster over in a
single off season. Maybe my memory is failing. Could you remind me when
that happened?

Yeah. That trade demand last summer really killed the team. Where's he
going to go? Boston?

Oh, I don't think we really want him. No offense.

And there's a difference between a trade demand and a player being able
to opt out of his contract. In one, the organization has a choice.

I'm not sayin' it's gonna happen. I'm just sayin' that Kobe might get
a little bit antsy if they don't win it all next year. You know who
has a lot of money and doesn't mind spending it? The Mavericks.

If the Lakers miss the POs next year or get knocked out in the first
round, I'll worry. A little.

Huh? What do you mean "End of List"? Players the Lakers drafted? I'd count
Kobe in that category since he was drafted for the Lakers and never spent
even draft night as anything but a Laker.

When did that ever happen until this last offseason? 30 years ago? If the
Celtics had convinced some players to go to Boston during the
Pierce/Walker years maybe they would've been better.

It isn't a process when you buy 7 new players in the off-season. It
doesn't change the fact that they won the title, but stop fooling
yourself that this was some kind of battle-tested team that came through
years of perseverance to finally win it all. It's a team of hired guns
that pulled it off.

The Russell stuff means something. Mock it all you want. The fact
that Garnett has Russell's seal of approval means something to me,
emotionally.

Ray Allen's links to the area mean something to me.

The fact that Perkins and Rondo are unappreciated players who we
drafted and developed means something to me.

And most of all, it's Pierce. It's a guy who stuck with us through
10 years of really poor teams, and he's finally leading the Celtics
to a championship. If you don't believe that means anything, you
don't, but it does.

See what I said? Of course, when the RedSox went out and bought
themselves a team, it was only because "they had to."

But Pat, maybe you could name all the big free agent acquisitions the
Yankees made that took them to World Series wins.

I'll be waiting for your pick in the Finals and go with the opposite.
Worked just as I said it would this year.

It's also good that we had those 8+ ESPN "experts" to tell us what
team would win. They should just use farm animals to predict from now
on. Can't do any worse.

Sorry; I thought it was clear.

"No."

Seriously. I'm completely happy. I can go over why these guys deserve
to wear Green yet again, if you want.

Again, that is not the point I was making and which you continue to
studiously avoid. That's fine.

These guys made it easy by embracing a team concept and becoming the
modern embodiment of what Celtic basketball used to be. Garnett was
always a Celtic, we just didn't know it. Posey does things that makes
real basketball fans smile. House defied his reputation, worked hard
all year, never complained and filled his role. Ray Allen is possibly
the classiest man currently playing in the NBA.

Yes, there was some pain in seeing the young players you had invested
the hope for the future leave, but these guys made up for it quickly.

Here's the really interesting thing: conventional wisdom before this
season was that teams needed at least one season to gel before they
would be championship caliber. The Celtics defied that CW; they even
struggled in the early rounds which usually means a team has not made
the leap. Does that mean that you can throw out that CW (maybe the
playoffs are long enough now that teams get the equivalent of multiple
seasons in one year?)?

OTOH, the mid-season trades of Phoenix and Dallas seem to contradict the
above. Or you could argue that they just didn't have enough time --
after all the Celtics had an entire season. (I'm not including the
Gasol trade because that was just an addition when viewed from a purely
basketball standpoint.)
