This is the NBA... an offensive player could beat a defender about the neck
and chest with a pipe wrench with the game clock winding down, they will not
call a loose ball foul in that situation. I think the thinking is: loose
ball foul is of course FTs for the defending team with perhaps fractions of
a second remaining, therefore likely they would win the game for the
defending team... which is bad because... um... well, actually it's not
bad... if it's in the rules, shouldn't it be called regardless of game
situation? There seems to be an "unwritten rule" that refs don't want to
blow whistles late... let players sort it out... which is silly of course
but hey, it's been that way for a looooooong time...
