I definitely don't disagree with your assumptions--the Mystics
management have made repeated bad decisions over the years (hmm,
sounds like the Wizards as well--apparently the Mystics are subject to
"The Curse of Les Boulez", as Tony Kornheiser calls it):
--Releasing Andrea Nagy, or at least not picking up Cara Consuegra,
either of whom is better than the current point, or at the least would
make a good backup. Nagy was released, of course, because Maher
wanted to work with Annie Burgess again. Cara, backing up one of the
best points in the league, never got a good chance with Utah. She
rarely got playing time, so her assists per game were minimal. But
her assists per minute were outstanding--among the best in the league,
with few turnovers.
--Trading Shalonda Enis for Vicky Bullett, which was basically trading
the future for a short-lived run in the present. Yes, I love Vicky,
and she obviously helped the Mystics into and in the playoffs last
year, but Shalonda could be helping them now and for many more years
into the future (she certainly helped defeat them tonight).
--I could go on but won't.
On the other hand, I sincerely doubt that if the lottery gets them the
first or second pick, that they or any other team would pick anyone
other than Alana Beard or Diana Taurasi. Much as when they had the
number one pick when Holdsclaw was graduating, that's just not
"mess-upable". I think Taurasi would help the Mystics a little more,
but either player would help them immensely.
And let's not forget, the Mystics have made a few good
decisions over the years. Yes, Detroit got a great pick with the
third pick, but the Mystics picked Coco Miller with the NINTH pick,
and she's been one of the few bright spots for them this year.
And one can hardly fault the Mystics management for
Dales-Schuman, who has been one of the major disappointments this year
(and the latter half of last year), yet who looked like she would be
much better than she's turned out to be. I'll go along with those who
think she needs to play more in the off-season, instead of working in
the glamour jobs (which she is admittedly excellent at). I have
little doubt that if Dales-Schuman were playing up to her potential,
as she did in the first half of last season, that the Mystics might
well be at 13-2 instead of at 2-13.
