I'm beginning to lose faith in C-Trolls. Ok, plain and simple you
state the Lakers defense "sucked". Lakers beat Celtics
twice..gasp..how did that happen?

*********************************************************

So your decision making path has lead to you conclude that my point was a
bad defensive team should go 0-82 for the season? Wow. Too much smog in
LA. The point, which you continue to skirt over hoping it will just go
away, is that the Laker defense sucked. They don't have many good defensive
players (marginally Fisher and at times Kobe) and they don't play team
defense. But this isn't just my opinion, it's fact - just look at how they
performed all season long and throughout the playoffs = BOTTOM HALF in
each. That's not "adequate". It's woeful.

but not with the denigrating standards your fellow laker fans were
trying to apply. malone and payton were hired guns who tried to hang
on for less money to get that ring. your bozo friends are trying to
say that garnett and allen - who were *traded for* and *getting full
price* - were somehow doing the same thing.

Who's the third mercenary, P.J. Brown?

Errr, the mercenaries would be the ones paid a lot, not a little. Payton
and Malone were anti-mercenaries, taking less than value to try to win.

Ok, you're right. It means nothing now that the Lakers beat the
celtics twice. When you have scoreboard you can ignore all those nasty
little loss things.

and my point which you are obviously are turning a blind eye to is
that the Lakers beat the Celtics twice.

Wow. If only that meant something.

Yeah, but if you're having the mercenary argument you gotta count
the ring as part of the potential payment.

True, but that cancels out for any of them going to a contender.

Sorta kinda. If you're taking less for the chance at a ring, there's no
question but that the ring is the primary motivation. If you're just
getting traded to a contender, it's difficult to say how much value the
ring has to you.

In Allen's case, I don't believe he had a no-trade clause, although I
have no reason to think he objected to the trade. In Garnett's case, he
had a no-trade clause but everyone -- including presumably him --
figured there'd be a year or two of learning to play as a team before
they contended.

And both of 'em really, really liked being here. I don't think either
of them would be elsewhere next year if they hadn't won. This is a
pretty sharp contrast to Malone and Payton.

I don't think we disagree here really - one the one hand we have two guys
who signed with a contender, on the other two guys who force trades to a
contender. It's the same thing however you look at it, what I was ripping
was the silly notion that being a mercenary meant taking less money -
obviously 180 degrees from what a mercenary does in reality, which is
perform 100% for the money.

> -- including presumably him --

Here we digress. The players, coaches, front office and any fans who had
much of a clue knew these moves created basically a two year window of
opportunity. I'm not buying that Garnett came expecting to only win a
title after he had declined a good deal and Allen was finished.

I would think it is a pretty sharp contrast, given that neither of them
suffered a career-ending injury as did Malone or see the whole team broken
up as did Payton. Apples and watermelons.

Eh, sort of. The distinction I'm drawing is between performing 100% for
the rewards -- in which I include the ring -- and performing for the
rewards and for the sake of the team and the history.

The ring means a /huge/ amount to Garnett, obviously. I also believe
that, over the course of the year, he started caring about Celtics
history as well. To me, that matters. I think even if you disagree
with me you get what I mean; the Lakers are the other team in the NBA
that can talk about a proud history in the same manner.

Note that Allen didn't force the trade, btw.

Yeah, we figured three years. Check the archives. Best bet was that
they'd win either next year or the year after that, and that there'd be
no chance after that. 2007 was supposed to be the year where they all
learned to play together. Nobody expected them to win this year.

Well, but that's the point. The Lakers fell apart when they didn't win
the title. The Celtics wouldn't have. Yeah, this is speculation on my
part, but I'm fairly confident about it for reasons I could go into at
some length.

I agree that history, mystique, or whatever you want to call it, is an
asset for these two teams in pursuing players over any other franchises,
even the high profile and rich history types like Chicago and New York.
For that subset of players who would tend to care about such things, at least.

However small that is.

C.f. all the people who want to play for Miami cause Miami sounds like a
fun town. This is the real reason why Vegas must never get an NBA
franchise; too much of an advantage in the free agent market.
