You are just now questioning McHale's GM skills? :)
In this case they got a bit more off the cap and Greg Buckner, while a bit
older will provide a more aggressive attitude than Hassell. A wash most
would agree.

Haha. Nothing McHale does should surprise anyone. I just wish he'd
give up the incriminating photos of Glen Taylor so the Wolves could
fire him already.
Hassell is a nice effort player, but he's been backsliding a bit
lately.

Hi Dave, et al.
My quick take was that Mark Cuban is interested
in winning, while Kevin McHale is only interested in
lowering his payroll -- and believes that his <cough>
awesome draft choices made Trenton expendable.
Britt Robson recalls that Hassell and Wittman got
into a little spat last season and that may have also
been a contributing factor.

I look for Trenton to truly blossom playing for Avery
Johnson and presumably play the "2" exclusively. >> Stay informed about: hassell-buckner trade |

The Wolves have been handcuffed by McHale's overly generous contracts
for years, that's part of the reason they could hardly ever improve or
take advantage of having a league MVP on the roster. After moving
KG's max-plus contract, this is the second step in climbing out of
that hole because Buckner doesn't tie up as much money for so long. By
the time the younger players are ready to contend I'd like the team to
have the cap flexibility to actually build a team.
After the hand-check rules were changed, Hassell hasn't been nearly as
effective a defender, and frankly I'm so sick of the Wolves of recent
years I'd reallly just like to see new players. Last year was the
first year that I didn't even enjoy going to Wolves games, and part of
the reason for that was knowing they were about as good as they were
ever going to be.
I'm okay with them not being very good this year: the '96-'97 Wolves
had a losing record, two halves of a shooting guard, a sleepy center
who made them play 4-on-5 on offense, they gave up too many offensive
rebounds and couldn't guard anyone on the perimeter so they gave up
100 points a game, and got swept by the Rockets but they were a hell
of a lot of fun to watch. I just don't want them to be stuck in the
mud like they've been for so many years. >> Stay informed about: hassell-buckner trade |

lowering his payroll? that's funny. hassell is due 13 million over
three years and buckner is due 15.8 million over four years. how is he
saving money?

Dave, I don't know where you got your numbers,
and that said, I don't know where Britt Robson (the
reporter) got his, but in his article (linked above) we
read:
: ...Probably most significantly, Buckner is nearly
: $2 million cheaper over the next three seasons,
: and I suppose if the Wolves are going with youth
: anyway, the vets on the bench can be discounted.
:
: [Update: A smart reader just informed me that
: because Buckner's third year is a team option and
: thus not guaranteed, Wolves could save up to $5.79
: million in this deal.] >> Stay informed about: hassell-buckner trade |
