San Antonio Spurs
On paper, the defending NBA champions appear to have upgraded their
roster with the additions of Rasho Nesterovic, Ron Mercer, Hedo
Turkoglu, Robert Horry and Anthony Carter. If coach Gregg Popovich and
guard Tony Parker can make up over the courting of Jason Kidd, they
should be favored to repeat.
Dallas Mavericks
While all the other top teams in the West were improving, Dallas got
left out. The Mavs tried to get Alonzo Mourning and believed they had
a deal, only to have Mourning change his mind. Still trying to acquire
some size and toughness.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Many are already crediting them with the best set of offseason moves,
acquiring Latrell Sprewell in a trade with New York and Sam Cassell in
a deal with Milwaukee and signing free agents Michael Olowokandi, Fred
Hoiberg and Mark Madsen.
PACIFIC DIVISION
Sacramento Kings
Stumbled into the Brad Miller deal after planning to have a quiet
offseason, giving up two bench players off a deep roster for an
All-Star center (albeit an Eastern Conference one) who will eventually
take over for Vlade Divac. Remaining business includes deciding
whether to keep restricted free agent Jim Jackson.
Los Angeles Lakers
It began as such a promising offseason with the signings of Karl
Malone and Gary Payton, but the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case has
put everything on hold indefinitely. The Lakers still have a lack of
depth at all positions except for point guard.
Portland Trail Blazers
Lost their best playmaker, Scottie Pippen, as a free agent, and
endured yet another arrest as guard Damon Stoudamire was caught trying
to take a bag of marijuana wrapped in tin foil through an airport
medal detector. Will be without a true center unless Arvydas Sabonis
decides to return. >> Stay informed about: Looking at moves by the 29 NBA teams |

Yeah I tell you. One look at that Dirk guy up there Dallas should've told
them enough.

I didn't think much of this little analysis. The article fails to mention
the Kings losing some of their depth. Also, IMHO, if the Kings are trying to
decide "whether to keep" Jim Jackson, then they may be in worse financial
condition than we know.
How can a team have a lack of depth at all but one position? Wouldn't that
mean a team does not have a full 12 man roster? In addition to point guard,
the Lakers have depth at small forward, and even at power forward, all on
paper of course. As far as Kobe is concerned, actually at this point,
nothing is on hold.

If they keep Jim Jackson, they really haven't lost depth at all. Hedo
rarely played anyway, Clark is replaced by Brad Miller, and Pollard was
injured all season and rarely played either. Resigning Jackson is an
imporant thing though. If they don't, then we have Gerald Wallace coming
off the bench... oh boy.

I think he means lack of QUALITY talent coming off the bench... I'd say
they do have that at small forward, not point guard though. Derek
Fisher? Kind of old at the PF postion. They don't really need depth at
SG and C though. How long is Kobe going to rest... honestly.

Tyson had a lot more years on his conviction but he served much less.
It is called superstar justice, if he is even convicted.

The game is changing. Guys like Ilgauskas, Nowitski, Divac, and Peja
are showing that big white guys can be effective in the NBA.
Rasho is expected to get 12 points and 8 rebounds. Anything more than
that next year is gravy. >> Stay informed about: Looking at moves by the 29 NBA teams |

Who is calling him a superstar?
All the Spurs want out of him is the ability to be a competent
starter. If they got a guy at Divac's level, they would be very
pleased. Bradley hasn't been a 12 and 8 guy is a while.

Malik Rose can get 12/8, so why don't they just jack his salary to what
they pay Nesterovich? Then they could have used the mid-level exception
to get Kandi if they wanted someone a bit more than a stiff. >> Stay informed about: Looking at moves by the 29 NBA teams |
