if the "dude" threw the first punch fine, but he didn't. O'neal did. He
freely chose to hit him. And he must pay for his decisions.

Who cares? The guy was in a place where he shouldn't have been. Why the hell
was he on the floor in the first place? Let's face it - the probability is
very high that the guy went down there to engage in fisticuffs. Too bad for
him that he was knocked flat before he had a chance to get his own shots in.
But don't shed a tear for him or think the players are at fault for this

Perhaps this one was just escaping the mess in the stands. He was certainly
no threat laying on the floor when Jermaine started his charge which could
have done very serious damage had O'Neal not lost his footing.
It has also been reported he hit the ballboy.

Finally, a voice of reason in this whole debate!
I agree that O'Neal was in the wrong, but his actions are understandable.
Let's recall the context of this entire situation. You have fans fighting
players in the stands. At that point, you have more fans throwing debris
onto the court and at players. You have a huge melee and a near riot.
You then see a guy come onto the floor and attacking players. You see
another guy on the floor who looks threatening. Yeah - I'm gonna wait for
this guy to clock me rigggggggggghhhhhhht.

The guy got what he deserved and then some!

Oh come on. You're saying that you escape the mess in the stands to enter
the riot pit on the floor? If the Detroit arena is designed anything like
the ACC, there are dozens of exit points at which that fan could have easily
gone to.

If caught between the brawl in the stands and the scorers table there might
have been good cause to go out on the sideline.
Whatever, Jermaine's retaliation was not only against the wrong guy, it was
against someone just picking himself off the floor, not exactly anyone he
could claim self defense.
The penalty for a fan coming on the floor is ejection from the building or a
tresspass charge, not being attacked by a 7 foot NBA player.

Looks like he was defending a fellow team mate who was being attacked by
two people. If you look at the video tape, both of those guys came
toward Artest. After Artest hit the first guy, his buddy ran after
Artest and that is when O'neil whomped his ass!

Totally legitimate.

The fines and suspensions will come down, either through appeal or from
an arbitrator.

If not, then it is time to reorganize the NBA Commission, and let one
man have the final say so on fines or appeals. There should be some
kind of committee that settles this.
