Who do the Celts end up with: Donte Greene, Mario Chalmers, or Chris
Douglas-Roberts? Any of the three would be fine with me.

A Tony Allen trade in the works?

Why they'd take this guy over Douglas-Roberts, I have no idea. Ainge
seems to do well in the draft, so I guess I have to hope, but on the
surface, why take a guy that's got *major* yellow or red flags (off-
court issues, horrendous FT%, etc.) over a guy with more size who was
a key player on a national championship contending team?

Right...he takes it to the hoop, passes up the easy layup and keeps
going.

I've watched him play for the Lobos. He led the Mountain West
conference in rebounding and was fourth in scoring. This guy plays
with a lot of energy, has a big vertical, and is good off the glass.
He's a good shooter, not Ray Allen good, but his strength is getting
to the paint and getting boards. Unlike Rondo, Giddens won't shy away
from taking it to the hoop.

This is from collegehoopsnet.com:

College: New Mexico

Class: Senior

Position: SG

Height: 6'5"

Weight: 205lbs

?

Accolades: MWC co-Player of the Year (08), First Team All-MWC (08),
Honorable Mention All-American - AP (08), Third Team High-Major
All-American - CHN (08), Honorable Mention All-MWC (07), Honorable Mention
All-Big 12 (04), Big 12 All-Freshman Team (04), McDonald's All-American -
high school (03), Oklahoma's Gatorade Player of the Year - high school (03).

Scouting Report: A highly decorated wing player with NBA athleticism.

Strengths: Great athlete - track athlete in high school also. Crazy
vertical - reportedly 40" or more. Strong finisher - attacks the rim, dunks
on people. Nice elevation & extension on his jumper. Exceptional rebounder
for a guard. Long arms. Strong physique. Big time scorer in college. Decent
assist man. Shot for a great percentage for a guard - 51.6% this year. Gets
into the passing lanes for steals. Great shot-blocker for a guard.

Weaknesses: Age - is already 23-years-old. Horrible free throw shooter. Had
off-court issues in college. Had attitude issues in the past. Needs to
improve on his ball-handling for the NBA. Still inconsistent. Defense still
needs improvement. Needs to become a more consistent three-point shooter for
the NBA.

Projected 2008 Draft Range: Early to mid second round pick.

Consensus: Giddens has all the tools to be an NBA pro. However, the fact
that he is up to four years older than other prospects and has had a shady
past casts a shadow on his draft stock.

..... Looking at his FT%, it really is horrible. That always concerns me
that a guy can't really shoot as well as advertised. I disagree about the
age issue. I prefer an older player as they are more mature and ready to
contribute - especially important with the C's given their age. He's a good
size for a guard. We will have to wait and see I guess.

How is his FT percentage that bad? And his shooting wasn't that hot
until this year... I'm not overwhelmed. Hm. Good rebounds for a
guard. I think he's a possible Tony Allen replacement; they've gotta
be figuring that the Three Party can draw a clear bright line as far
as his behavior goes.

Eh, it's the #30 pick.

I HATE guards who can score from the field but can't hit a free throw!

From the comments from Doc it sounds like they think Giddens can have
an impact right away due to his foot speed and quickness on defense.
If they think they can coach him to be a shut down defender and
rebounder, maybe they aren't that worried about his FT%. You don't
get too many starters with the 30th pick, so better to try to find a
guy who can fill a role. I'm kind of amazed that the Celts (and many
teams) passed over CDR, but maybe they didn't think he fit their
defensive system. CDR is known as scorer not a defensive player.

You can't leave either of them unguarded. Giddens is an aggressive
scorer. I think it is a good complement to a guy like Rondo who is
unselfish to a fault. How many times did Rondo pass up a layup?
Giddens isn't a ball hog, but he isn't bashful either. The key for
Giddens will be learning and accepting a role so that he can
contribute right away. For the Lobos he was the go-to scorer, he
can't be that for the Celts.

They need to teach him to use the basket to guard against the block.
Too often he is under the basket passing. Sometimes that is
warranted, but there is something to be said for taking high
percentage shots.

yeah, it's always seemed to me that if you're going to have the nerve to
take 20 footers in a game regularly, then spend some time at the FT line and
get that part of your game down pronto. It was one [of many] things that
drove me batty about Walker.
