Got to see the Wolves/Chicago game on Wed.
Just about the only positive thing to say was that Craig Smith
is gonna be one of my favorites. The kid works hard, has great
hands and at 270+ lbs (it's all muscle, folks) sets a pretty darn
good pick. I don't know if he's quite fast enough to play the "3"
on defense, but he isn't slow. His 6'7" height is going to be a
little problematic at PF, but his level of savvy and effort is not.
James at PG? Bah. Foye at PG? Humbug. Jeez, that means
Hudson. Pleeeze, noooo......
If Casey has some kind of offensive scheme, it wasn't evident.
It seems like Blount and KG were handling the ball at the top
of the key, instead of guards. And there was a lot of trying to
dribble into the lane, alone into a trio of defenders. Ugly.
Eddie beganwell, with some boards and a block or too, then
went into "shootist" mode.
Ben Wallace outjumped KG to start the game and also made
some inside shots in his face. It's gonna be long year, I'm afraid. >> Stay informed about: A pleasant surprise - Craig Smith |

You've come around on Smith. Cool. >> Stay informed about: A pleasant surprise - Craig Smith |

I look forward to seeing the kid play. Sounds like a potential
diamond in the rough, and the Wolves could sure use a little
luck in that area this season, IMO.

James is going to be a disappointment at the point?
Great, just f***ing great.

Casey did *nothing* to impress me last season. I'd be
surprised to see him do much more this season.

Was he at least sinking some three's?

Wallace was a great addition to the Bulls. They may even be
a competitive team to watch this season.
>It's gonna be long year, I'm afraid.
Yep, it looks like another potential low seed in the playoffs, or
no seed at all. If that happens, expect to see KG gone next
season.

Could you be more specific? Judging from the score, it seems the
offense ran pretty smoothly. >> Stay informed about: A pleasant surprise - Craig Smith |

1) Mike didn't seem like a team leader willing to run the
team. He appeared entirely too willing to give up the ball.
This repeatedly meant Blount was trying to get a play going
from the top of the key. James attempted more than a few
of the straight "entry" passes that Casey had promised that
the Wolves would quit doing. When he drove, it was into a
crowd (usually containing Ben Wallace, now there's a good
plan!) . His defense was of the Ricky Davis variety - kinda
there, but not actually affecting anyone.
2) Foye is not a natural born PG, and it showed. Sure,
he's a rookie, but some things you can just tell, like how
confident he is with his dribble. Seriously, Craig Smith's
dribbling looks more confident and authoritative than Foye's.
Foye tried harder on defense than James. He was not
effective at trying to break anyone down.
If there is a "Casey Offensive Scheme" I have yet to
see it. >> Stay informed about: A pleasant surprise - Craig Smith |

OK, well, consider that the guy hasn't been with the team long
enough to find his place and his strengths/weaknesses on this
roster yet. Give that a little time. Casey is supposedly good at
bringing up young talent and getting the most from them, so this
could still turn itself around, if James has the talent (and the
patience).
I won't hold my breath for it to happen, but it's way too early to
give up on the guy as well.

Seems more like a lot of "trial-and-error" to me.
So far he still looks like an assistant coach trying to step in
and fill the starting coach role. Not a good way to still look
after an entire season with the team, IMO.

He did get boned by the Boston trade, but things
weren't looking good before then either. >> Stay informed about: A pleasant surprise - Craig Smith |
