Sagarin had Winthrop in the 30's. Winthrop? At 4-3 &
0-3 vs. the top 30?
Well, they did play tough at UNC, Wisconsin and Maryland.
Beat Miss. State. Could be an upset special in March on
a neutral floor, yes yesss

Well, done, Ted. Now that you mention it, I remember that post - maybe you
are the reason I picked Winthrop in all 4 of my bracket entries. >> Stay informed about: I prop of myself |

Nothing means anything in mid-December.
I say chalk it up to the Drunken Monkey Effect.

It's a good thing I propped them recently too.

It was waaaaaaay early, but they didn't play MD all that tough. They were
down 16 at the half and lost by 12. >> Stay informed about: I prop of myself |

Whatever. I was there when Winthrop almost beat UNC (and was on the second
row) and thus watched a little more Winthrop action through the season.
That team is for real. They still played at a high level with Terrell
Martin injured.
All it took was *seeing* Winthrop at some point this season to know they're
pretty dang good. And it's a balanced attack, not just good shooting or
having a good big man. They play all facets well, including defense.

They played "one of their worst games in four years" according to Greg
Marshall. Only shot 30% for the game and were 5-28 on 3's (yeah, I'm sure
Maryland's defense had something to do with that, but...). It's not
uncommon for good teams to have bad losses at some point. Now, I'm not
saying that Winthrop is clearly better than Maryland, far from it. I think
both are very good teams and it would actually be hard to say who is
better. I think both are probably between the 15th and 20th best teams in
the country. But I think the main point is that means they're squarely
better than Duke. :-)

No arguments, and I did say it was early. That notwithstanding, Winthrop
still has a dance card and the Terps are landing at BWI soon, so the woofing
is done. I wish Winthrop well. My dark horse is Georgetown, but I'm
pulling for the remaining ACC teams (even though the idea of pulling for UNC
is flat out hard). >> Stay informed about: I prop of myself |

Truly. Got two more women's hard-court tennis tourneys and then the rest
of March Madness (wot my interest in has already taken a hit) and the
beginning of the clay tennis season <hork> gives me about a six-week
sports void.
Oh, well, maybe I can get some work done. Or at least increase my Usenet
posting rates.
Although not here.
